Windshield Repair & Replacement

When the car glass is broken? How to deal with it?

When should replace car glass and when should repair it? These are the questions that bother many people. Some people do not know how to react when their windshield has a crack or scratch. And often they choose to use repair options instead of replacing the windshield despite its high price. However, there are some cases where you must be quick to replace your car’s glass. If you have determined that you need to change the windshield immediately, then go through this list below before choosing a replacement or repair option for your damage.

Here are 8 reasons why your damaged windshield should not be repaired:

1- Cracks are larger than 12 inches in radius

2 The damage is right on top of your line of sight

3- Damage is directly in the driver’s sight

4- The damage has compromised the strength or integrity of windshields (damage due to flying debris or animal impact)

5- Cracks run through the Front Driver & Passenger side windows

6- Your car has fallen off a cliff

7- You have started hearing odd noises while driving

8- The crack itself is obstructing the view out of one or both sides of the windshield. This may be especially true if you can’t see cars’ headlights at night. Any smudges on the glass, raindrops, small chips along cracks that cover up less than 30% of the entire windshield area can easily be repaired by using a special windshield repair kit. You can either buy one or make it yourself. Such kits are readily available for purchase on the internet and at most automotive part stores.

You should consider a replacement if cracks are larger than 12 inches in radius, if they are right on top of your line of sight, if the damage is directly in the driver’s sight, or if damage has compromised the strength or integrity of windshields (damage due to flying debris or animal impact).

Cost of  Repair and Replacement

The cost of repairing a windshield will be 60% less than the cost of replacement. However, in most cases, it is not wise to spend so much money on such repairs when your windshield can be replaced for half the cost. The price range for replacing a car windshield varies from 2000-7000 depending on various factors such as: whether another company is involved in the installation process or not, whether fancy add-ons like rain sensors etc are installed or not, and what type of glass you choose (Low-E or UV protective). Anyhow if your damaged windshield has cracks larger than 12 inches in radius, damage right on top of the driver’s sight, cracks that go through both front side windows, or other damages compromising its strength/integrity, then it is time to replace the glass.

Installation Time

Replacing a windshield will take two hours of your time. On the other hand, the repairing takes only 30 minutes because there are no special tools for it. However, if you have decided to go for the replacement, then make sure that the service provider has experience with your car’s model. Either they offer original materials or aftermarket parts, keep in mind that you should not compromise on quality just to cut costs. This tip is especially important when dealing with high-end cars such as Mercedes Benz, BMW or Audi, etc.

After deciding whether to repair or replace your damaged windshield, make sure you select a reputable company offering excellent customer service & warranties on their work.
