Confused between laminated and tempered auto glass? Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the right one.
All car glass isn’t the same. At Citiglass, we help customers understand the two main types of automotive glass used today: laminated and tempered. Both offer safety—but in different ways.
Laminated Glass (Used in Windshields):
- Made of two glass sheets with a plastic layer between
- Even when cracked, it doesn’t shatter
- Provides better UV protection
- Supports airbag deployment
Ideal For: Windshields due to safety and structure.
Tempered Glass (Used in Side & Rear Windows):
- Heat-treated for strength
- Breaks into small blunt pieces (not sharp shards)
- Cheaper to produce than laminated glass
Ideal For: Side windows, rear glass, sunroofs.
How to Tell Them Apart?
- Laminated glass often has a slight “plastic” sound when tapped.
- Tempered glass is lighter and feels harder.
